"When you think positive, happy loving thoughts,
there's a different chemistry that goes into your body,
than when you think depressing, negative, anguished thoughts.
The way you decide to think has a dramatic effect,
on your chemistry and on your physiology."
Dr Wayne W Dyer

Before you practice Yoga it’s worth bearing these few things in mind:
• Importantly – always tell your teacher if you have a medical condition, then you can make sure you follow the precautions or prohibitions for a safe practice.
• Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing. Layers are good so you can make sure your body stays at the right temperature. Tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts are good. No belts or large jewellery.
• Bring a non-slip mat or large beach towel; mats are available for beginners to borrow. Also these are available to purchase from the BWY online shop. Place your mat in a spot comfortable for you..
• Visit the toilet before practice!
• Make sure you haven’t eaten too much recently – wait 4 hours after a heavy meal and 2 hours after a light meal. You can bring a bottle of water to sip in class.
• A blanket to keep warm for relaxation, as well as a small cushion to rest your head on, can be useful.
• Try to practice ‘at home’. What about trying Salute to the Sun every morning? Set aside a quiet space for a home practice. Or you could try some conscious breathing in traffic jam or Tadasana in the supermarket check-out queue! You’ll soon see the benefits. A calmer, more focussed you!

Every session includes the following:

  • Get centred - Pratyahara - 'off the hamster wheel' leave the world behind and mono-task!
  • Postures - Asana - develop strength, balance and flexibility.
  • Breathing - Pranayama - breath control - breath and mind and intrinsically linked - slow breath, calm mind.
  • Relax - Dharana/Dhyana - guided meditation and relaxation for that serene feeling.
